SEMINARIO

Critical Landscape.
Planning the territory and Landscape

(In collaboration with Dept of Environment & Planning of Government of Canary Islands)

Director: Vicente Mirallave

ABSTRACT

The landscape is the result of each moment in the integration of physical, ecological, natural and cultural processes and at once the landscape is also a heritage, a resource and a sign of cultural identity.

Landscape policies should not only be aimed at mitigating or resolving problems; it is also necessary, in order for them not to be repeated, to examine their causes and invert the difficulties towards positive arguments. Investing in information and education helps in the understanding of landscape as a strategic resource for the qualitative development of an economy based on services and tourism, favouring social cohesion and forming a key part of the cultural heritage.

We must produce a profound change from within public institutions in the unsupportive behaviour to be seen in many of the actions with a negative impact on the landscape; and not only of natural landscapes of great value, but also, and especially, the everyday common landscape.

Speaking of a quality landscape is to speak of a clear manifestation of the territorial culture of its inhabitants while at once an indication of their quality of life.
