PRESENTACIÓN DEL TERRITORIO
2008-2009
Photography, computer graphics, model

Geographic Information System (GIS), contrasting and combination of data. Spatial data infrastructures for the integration of information. Themed cartographies, full of impartial data sorted into layers. Themed maps with different applications to figure out the behaviour of our territory.

Immersion into the islands through Grafcan’s cartographies and archives, which offer the possibility of global understanding through different readings of the interactions of all the components of the territory. For instance: “territory and mobility”. The mere fact of being islands determines the importance of infrastructures in the transformation of the land of the islands. Infrastructures play a crucial role in the historical processes of a region. It goes as far as determining its structure, its development and its social changes.

PAISAJES RURALES DE CANARIAS. AGRICULTURA, ABANDONO AGRARIO Y URBANIZACIÓN DEL ESPACIO RURAL
2008
Maps, photographys

This sequence of maps and photographs show recent changes in the rural environment, the transformation of rural space into residential space, the reduction in the productive function of the rural space, agricultural desertion and urban developments and the impact on the deserted territory. These agricultural maps reveal the diversity of the Canaries’ rural landscape, from utilitarian to emblematic and singular landscapes included in the ethnographic charts, to those made up by barren or uncultivated plots of land that sometimes result in the urban development of rural space.

ESTRUCTURAS Y SISTEMAS DEL AGUA EN CANARIAS. LA FÁBRICA DEL AGUA
2008-2009
Photomontage, diagrams and model

A territory built by the superposition of sediments or strata supporting an accumulation of traces of tellurian events and artificial actions. The intention of the water factory is to show how human actions have modelled the landscape of the islands for the exploitation of water. The reading focuses on the channels opened by water flow. The networks of voids made – and still in the making – by water, essential for the life of the islands, acts as the surface around the cogs of a music box.

BALSAS Y AGUA
2008
Photography

The exploitation of water resources in the Canary Islands has shaped their way of life, and it draws in every place peculiar geometries on the land.

“[…] to see what one sees”… To learn to see a different architecture in every day landscape in La Palma, produced by human labour in time, and which is undoubtedly valuable, including all those places which are not the natural protected landscapes that attract visitors to the island.
