SEMINAR
[Interdisciplinary meditations on something that still allows us to speak]
This seminar will take a multidisciplinary, or perhaps better said an undisciplined, approach to the idea of “silence”, the core motif for the 2nd Biennial of Architecture, Art and Landscape of the Canary Islands.
With lecturers, critics, curators and essayists from the fields of philosophy, compared literature, aesthetics, contemporary music, sculpture and public art, we will compose a fragmentary yet intense panorama of some key problematic constellations in the different facets of creation today.
From a reconsideration of the question of the sublime to the poetics of silence, from politics or hermeneutics, with a special focus on specific artists (for instance, Oteiza, Turrell or Morris), we will be outlining referential points in order to collectively draw a map of the aesthetics and also of the ethics that we need in what could well be called the Era of Noise.
Given the frequent practices of excess and voraciousness in the management of the territory or the alarming channelling of the discourse that still pretends to call itself “critical”, this seminar will attempt to uncover scenes of complexity in which there is no room for defensive or self-complacent hermeticism nor for a drift towards a pseudo-radicality which rhymes off the right slogans but is ultimately unable to take the next step to decisive action, that is to say, that it does not have the courage to commit itself.
These interpretative sessions on silence target students and graduates in Fine Arts, Architecture, History of Art, Philosophy and Humanities and, of course, all those interested in Contemporary Culture, from visual developments to multiple forms of textuality, from unheard sounds to the contemplation of the landscape that impose the maximum serenity.
