SEMINAR

The Picturesque and the Contemporary Landscape

Director: Iñaki Ábalos

ABSTRACT

This course examines the connection between research into the historical aesthetic theories of landscape and the practise of architecture and landscaping today. It is not a “doctoral” course but a controversial and provocative seminar looking to excite ideas and interesting dialogues. For that purpose it proposes a reflection on four themes or movements in which the notion of landscape has crystallised in a special way:

  • - The conformation of the idea of land-art
  • - The redefinition of the relation between palace and artificial creation
  • - The reflection of modernism on landscape
  • - The construction of the figure of the “landscape architect”

Besides it posits the interpretation of a series of projects by the speakers as practical case studies striving to redefine the relationships between artifice and nature in the contemporary context.
